Just look at Al Ula’s stunning landscape

SCARS ON THE LANDSCAPE ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My favourite thing about flying a drone is how they provide a different sense of scale. From above, the random rock formations of Al Ula appear as symmetrical scars on an immense scale! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The mountains in this range rise to 2,100 metres, the elevation gradually decreasing down to about 600 metres. It’s clear too that these were once extensive lava fields that made the plateaus here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I haven’t yet sailed the Rea Sea but I understand that the walls of this range drop abruptly to the water, with virtually no natural harbours along the entire coast. It must be quite the sight! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With @nadaalnadhi and @djiglobal ————————————————————— #notanad #independenttravel #notsponsored #WelcomeToArabia #الرياض ‎#جدة ‎#سعوديات #qahtani #saudiarabia #destinationksa #vision2030 #lovinsaudi #WelcomeToArabia #cnntravel #djiglobal

OVERLOOKING THE ELEPHANT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Al Ula’s Elephant Rock is one of many odd shaped geological marvels, and easy to drive right up to. In fact, if you’re going I’d suggest getting there early to avoid tour buses and get the best early morning light. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s easy enough to visit as a pitstop if you’re at Mada’in Saleh, but if you give yourself more time, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can climb up to see it from on high, from either side. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I posted a drone fly through from the ridge on the opposite side last week. Now here’s the view from the opposite peak. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You should probably bring a picnic mat up here! It’s worth staying a while to consider just how many millions of years it took for this creation to be build and then eroded in to shape! ————————————————————— #notanad #independenttravel #notsponsored #WelcomeToArabia #الرياض ‎#جدة ‎#سعوديات #riyadh #sauditourism #destinationksa #vision2030 #lovinsaudi #WelcomeToArabia #cnntravel #theguardian #lonelyplanet #lensbible #voyaged #passionpassport #travellingthroughtheworld #welltraveled #beautifuldestinations #bbctravel

FYI, Saudi Arabia is not all desert

THE SAUDI HIGHLANDS ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the southwest of Saudi is a small province named after the tribe who live there – the Asir. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Situated on a high plateau, the region receives the most rainfall of anywhere in the country, where peaks are as high as 3,000 meters and the temperatures fluctuate from 30 degrees in the daytime to chilly nights that brings dense morning fog. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That means much more natural vegetation than anywhere else, dense coniferous forests, and exposed ridges ideal for farming. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 'The Asir is home to many farmers who use irrigation to chiefly grow wheat and fruit crops. ————————————————————— #notanad #independenttravel #notsponsored #WelcomeToArabia #الرياض ‎#جدة ‎#سعوديات #riyadh #sauditourism #destinationksa #vision2030 #lovinsaudi #WelcomeToArabia #cnntravel #theguardian #lonelyplanet #lensbible #voyaged #passionpassport #travellingthroughtheworld #welltraveled #beautifuldestinations #bbctravel

GINGERBREAD HOUSES OF RIJAL ALMAA ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the mountains 45 km (28 mi) from Abha in 'Asir Region is this imposing town, known as Rijal Almaa. It translates as “The Brightest Men”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Houses here were constructed like fortresses, made of stone, clay and wood and are amongst the earliest permanent homes in the country, people previously being mostly nomadic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 60 of the towers with their white quartz window frames remain, and many are being restored by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) who have submitted the town for @UNESCO listing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Inside you’ll find bright coloured rooms and museums collecting artefacts from the trade route that used to pass through here, from Yemen to Medina. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ————————————————————— #notanad #independenttravel #notsponsored #WelcomeToArabia #الرياض ‎#جدة ‎#سعوديات #rijalalmaa #sauditourism #destinationksa #vision2030 #lovinsaudi #WelcomeToArabia #cnntravel #theguardian #lonelyplanet #lensbible #voyaged #passionpassport #travellingthroughtheworld #welltraveled #beautifuldestinations #bbctravel
