In the older part of Jeddah, there is a residential area near Souq Khaima that is home to several Afghani expats, many of which have been living in the country for over decades. Photos of an ice cream served in the neighbourhood started doing rounds on social media.
It caught our fancy and we visited it recently and were completely blown away by it.
The parlour is actually kind of decrepit and sits in a place far away from the main road. It really is hidden. But once you make the arduous journey to the parlour called Ice Cream Afghan you’ll be in for a surprise as it sells the kind of ice cream you won’t find anywhere else in the city.
Inside we met with the two old Afghani men who brought this age-old Afghani ice cream making tradition with them to Saudi Arabia. They’ve been running the place for almost 25 years now.
The ice cream is handmade and costs just SAR 5

Afghani Ice Cream!!! I habitually don't post food photos but I couldn't stop myself from doing so this time. I heard about the place a year ago but I finally mustered up the will to visit this place that lies in the older part of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I asked around for directions and finally found the place, a bit decrepit but nonetheless inviting. The place is called Ice Cream Afghan. Inside I met with the two old Afghani men who brought this age-old ice cream making tradition with them to Saudi Arabia. They've been running the place for almost 25 years now. Priced at SAR 5, the handmade ice cream is served with creamy syrup, rosewater and a dash of ground pistachio. I loved it and so did my foodie friends who accompanied me. On the whole, the ice cream is a must-try for foodies. Location: Behind Souq Al Khaima, near King Khalid Road. (Trust me it’s not that easy to find)
The owner let us in to show us the ice cream making process as well
If you didn’t have your dinner, you can always check out the amazing Afghani kebabs that they sell a stone’s throw away from the place.
On the whole, if you are an adventurous soul do add it in your Jeddah foods to try list but if you are more of the fine dining type than you are better off as far away from this place as possible.
Location: Behind Souq Al Khaima, near King Khalid Road.
