If you’ve clicked on this article then chances are, you’re considering reducing your carbon footprint in the world but confused due to your love for fashion. We get it.

It takes time to distance yourself from the shopping and dressing habits we picked up growing up, but there’s minuscule things you can do to make a BIG difference.

Sustainability is definitely a one-step-at-a-time process but a little goes a long way.

1. Limit your purchases

Make use of what you have now, and limit purchasing new things. A lot of clothing can be reused or restitched to a different design and can even be worn like it’s brand new.

If you’re a fashionista at heart, you’ll find it within you to unleash your creativity.

2. Try clothes-swapping with your friends periodically

If you and your friends almost have the same taste in style, then this little trick will be much easier to task on. Pick out a bunch of clothes you don’t like or haven’t worn in the last six months, ask your friend(s) to do the same, pick a meet-up spot and pick away at their clothing.

This is great for every season. Plus, you never know what might get you out of your dressing comfort zone. Someone else’s ‘unwanteds’ might just be your new treasure.

3. Learn about ethical and sustainable fashion- you’re not alone.

Although it may seem like it, a lot of people from different parts of the world are actually switching to ethical fashion.

There’s TONS of websites, youtube accounts to subscribe to and even books on sustainable clothing that you will benefit from 100%.

Also, don’t be afraid to start small and keep asking questions. Remember, you don’t gotta know everything all at once.

4. Donate your old clothes

Find a great place to donate your clothes or in your local donation boxes. There’s no reason to throw old clothes away. You either give it away to someone, or donate to those who could make use of it.

This way, nothing is going to waste. The key here is to try and practice zero-waste, and finding reusability for every item.

5. Learn how to repair, knit or find a good tailor

Paralleling with the statement above, learning to sew or knit can help you truly customise your clothing. Say a pair of jeans don’t fit you and it needs to be tightened at the waist, knowing how to work a sewing machine can help that.

In turn, there would be no need to purchase those new pair of jeans.

And what if the design is now outdated?

Search online for ways to renew your jeans with your newfound skill. It doesn’t cost you anything, plus it’s fun seeing what you can create with your bare hands.
